Top of the Mountain had a very important informational meeting on Monday, Feb. 16th, 2015. Besides the regular monthly meeting we had a special guest, Scott Cannon who discussed Gas Drilling and pipelines and the effects on our region. We learned that the PennEast pipeline near Scranton is crossing under the Schuykill River over several layers of abandoned coal mine shafts which is extremely hazardous due to mine subsidence.  This pipeline is going through Carbon County and possibly the very Western part of Monroe County.  We saw several instances where these pipelines and the industrial compressor stations and processing plants have leaked and exploded.  Also these compressor plants are large and noisy to the point of being disruptive to daily life and the pollution can make people sick.  As of now no compressor stations are planned for Monroe.  The Transco Leidy pipeline that is going through Monroe County will parallel an existing pipeline and will be used as storage.  This line already has full approvals so there isn't much chance of stopping it.  The PennEast pipeline is for transporting natural gas to New Jersey.  It's builders are seeking eminent domain to get the right of way to build this.  There is considerable opposition in New Jersey and with more awareness local communities in Pennsylvania  can join the fight to stop this pipeline.  Our local municipalities need to learn the facts and decide how to deal with this.   For more on what you can do to learn more please see the Gas Drilling Awareness Coalition website
